It's been said in earlier comments but I think it's important. If you're after mind-share you need an approach that will work on commodity shared hosting. Even mod_python is not widely installed by shared hosters.

The other thing that kills off any casual interest is the dependency of so much Python produced web-related code on use of a command line to run "python setup.py install". Shared hosting with command line access is very much the exception.
